Metal Sonic's popularity in the fandom is unwavering, and so are the various themes associated with the character: Sonic 4's Metal Sonic theme, Stardust Speedway Bad Future JP & US, Look-A-Like, Sonic the Fighter's "Never Let it Go," and various niche but mesmerizing fan-made works. Out of all of Sonic 4's tracks, Metal Sonic's had been the least straightforward despite its compositional simplicity. Indeed, various sound banks (Sonic 1/2, Sonic 3, Sonic 3D Blast, Dynamite Headdy, etc.) could not replicate the abrasive and mechanical instrumentation. Fortunately, the struggle ended after developing a fixation on Gunstar Heroes' OST, whose style is integrated into this cover. These FM patches closely parallel what Senoue utilized in Vacuum, to the extent that it would not surprise me if he were inspired by the instrumentation of Gunstar Heroes.

I often avoid shoehorning/cramming existing tracks into my covers (whether as leitmotifs or entirely), and would rather write original compositions if required. However, I could not resist it here, especially since the composition itself is a plausible nod to "Look-A-Like."
Stardust Speedway Bad Future US arpeggio
Stardust Speedway Bad Future JP-esque orchestra hit, both in notation and sound
My custom extension of Mad Gear Act 1, chord-wise (albeit there are several modified chords, in terms of notes and length)
Note: The popularized (at least within Sonic CD circles) "hue" sample is not present since this is a Gunstar Heroes arrangement. Consequently, I limit myself to the game's internal FM patches and samples. Otherwise (i.e. if this were in the versatile "Sound Source" style), I would have incorporated it somehow.
= Change log since the deleted version =
- The PSG and the intro lead instrument's vibrato settings were drastically reduced, hopefully resolving the off-pitch issue
- Less detune on the backing intro patches as a precautionary measure

= Trivia =
About 30 minutes prior to this repost, the original opening's "metallic lead" had excessive vibrato, which was an oversight that a viewer pointed out. While I can confirm the note was correct, the extreme LFO settings led to the valid perception of it being off-key.
The extension was initially planned to comprise an overt section of "Look-A-Like." Eventually, my conviction about including conspicuous references and how they could potentially steer the cover away from originality led to the eventual scrapping of that idea (which was before actually constructing the project file).
The original composition once had a jarringly cute sting that connected the "rapid" section with the "dubstep section," which was in a different key. It was cringe-inducing given the theme's context, but I can assure you that I've eliminated it.
Jun Senoue's and the "dubstep" portions were significantly more underwhelming (emptier) in an earlier draft of this upload. I spent an additional day amplifying the supporting melodies, patch selection, and mixing.
The "frantic" section, primarily inspired by Yosuke Yasui, is meant to convey the urgency of the race, which transpires in an innately speedy mechanism -- a rollercoaster.
The "dubstep section" is intended to encapsulate the section of the White Park battle, whereby he foists the mysterious orb on Sonic and Tails for the final few times.
The image once featured Gunstar Heroes characters, but they have been replaced with Sage, Tails Doll, Eggman, Silver Sonic/Mecha Sonic, Sonic, and Tails.
